In the first-leg victory at Stamford Bridge, Arsenal demonstrated the traits of a classic Gunners team that stood firm against intimidation.
It wasn’t required to be aesthetically pleasing. For much of Arsenal’s 3-2 success over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg on Wednesday, it was anything but. However, Mikel Arteta and his players found a certain beauty in their physicality and relentless aggression.
Arsenal’s triumph was rooted in their off-the-ball performance. They did have standout moments in possession, notably Martín Zubimendi’s goal for 3-1. His elegant run from right to left inside the penalty area, including a deceptive shot move that left Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana out of play, demonstrated remarkable coolness before the finish, leaving spectators in awe.
