Aria and Luxor Reach Settlements Over Religious Discrimination Suits Like Venetian - SCCG Management

Nearly a month after the Venetian Casino Resort resolved a US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) lawsuit regarding religious discrimination, two additional Las Vegas casinos have done the same.

According to a recent EEOC announcement, the ARIA Resort & Casino and Luxor Hotel & Casino have settled lawsuits concerning similar allegations.

While the Venetian’s case involved claims of disadvantaging and unfairly disciplining employees of various faiths, the settlements by Aria and Luxor focused on alleged unfair treatment of staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reports indicate that the MGM International-owned casinos faced allegations of “a denial of religious accommodations” for staff who did not comply with COVID vaccination policies. As a result of violating a section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the casinos have agreed to provide religious accommodation training to HR staff, with EEOC overseeing compliance.

Unlike the Venetian, which paid $85,000 to settle, the financial terms for The Aria and Luxor settlements were not disclosed by the EEOC.

EEOC Las Vegas Local Director Michael Mendoza praised the casinos for implementing training measures that he believes will significantly impact workers seeking religious accommodations. He emphasized the importance of employers understanding the federal requirement for reasonable religious accommodations.
