Aldershot Ends 99-Year Wembley Drought with Stylish FA Trophy Victory
Aldershot Town finally made history at Wembley Stadium, ending a 99-year wait by triumphing 3-0 over Spennymoor Town to lift their first-ever FA Trophy. Bathed in May sunshine, the Shots not only dominated the occasion with their performance on the pitch but also filled the stands with their passionate supporters, outnumbering their National League North opponents in both voice and presence.
The goals came in the second half, with Jack Barham opening the scoring before Dan Ellison and Josh Barrett sealed the deal for the National League side. Their emphatic victory was made even more poignant by the return of manager Tommy Widdrington, who suffered two strokes in November but remarkably made his way back to the dugout within two months. Leading his team to silverware, Widdrington described the experience as one that offered him “a certain sense of perspective.”
It was a polished and composed performance from Aldershot, one that will be remembered not just as a historic milestone but as a moment of resilience, passion, and unity.
Meanwhile, in the FA Vase final, Whitstable Town secured a narrow win over Whyteleafe, completing a memorable day of non-league football at the national stadium.
