The race for the division’s top spot is expected to be tight, but several factors might help the Mets capture their first NL East title in a decade. Here are three key elements to watch as they resume play after the All-Star break.
**Double aces at the turn**
The Mets’ rotation has been plagued by injuries this season, losing Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas, and Paul Blackburn early on. Griffin Canning is out for the year, Tylor Megill is sidelined, and Kodai Senga missed a month. Recently, the Mets welcomed back Manaea and Senga, allowing them to reassemble their anticipated five-man rotation: Senga, Manaea, Montas, Clay Holmes, and David Peterson. Senga’s return is particularly significant, boasting a 7-3 record and 1.47 ERA. Holmes’ transition from closer to starter is progressing well, and Peterson made his first All-Star appearance this year.
**Pitching at the trade deadline**
President of baseball operations David Stearns prioritizes depth, and with the trade deadline approaching, the Mets might need to enhance their pitching staff. While adding another starter is an option, reinforcing the bullpen is crucial. Left-handed relievers have been scarce due to injuries, with AJ Minter and Danny Young out for the season. Brooks Raley’s return from Tommy John surgery could provide a lift. The right-handed options have also struggled, with inconsistencies and injuries plaguing Huascar Brazoban, Ryne Stanek, Reed Garrett, Dedniel Nunez, and Max Kranick. A reliable set-up man might become a priority for Stearns.

Younger Mets players were expected to add depth to the lineup, but many have faced setbacks. Francisco Alvarez lost his starting catcher role and was sent to Triple-A. Mark Vientos, who hit 27 homers last year, has only six in the first half. Luisangel Acuna was demoted after Ronny Mauricio returned from a long rehab, and Brett Baty has been inconsistent. A need for additional help in center field exists as Tyrone Taylor assumes everyday duties following Jose Siri’s injury.
