2026 Winter Olympics: Team USA up to 17 gold medals with 1 week remaining

Breezy Johnson (women’s downhill), Jordan Stolz (men’s speed skating), and the American figure skating team all captured gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. Their respective efforts helped Team USA take home an additional 17 gold medals with one week of competition remaining.

More gold can be added to their collection when the men’s and women’s hockey teams reach the medal rounds of their tournaments. But, on the other hand, fan favorites Ilia Malinin (figure skating) and Chloe Kim (snowboarding) came up short of winning it all. Therefore, there’s no telling how their quest for gold will play out.

Without further explanation, here is who has performed well for Team USA over the past week.

Stolz sweeps the competition

At 21 years old, Stolz has already begun to separate himself from some of the world’s best speedskaters. He put his abilities on full display during the 500m, which he went on to win in an Olympic-record time of 33.77 seconds. The Wisconsin native had the same tenacity when we won the 1,000m earlier in the week.

Stolz is on pace to win four gold medals with the next competitions being the 1,500m and the Mass Start scheduled between Feb. 19 and Feb. 21. If he is successful in doing so, he will move into the upper echelon of speedskaters next to the likes of Eric Heiden, who won five gold medals in 1980.

Lemley triumphantly debuts

Elizabeth Lemley made her Olympic debut at 20, with much to prove. After coming up short in the qualifying round, she posted an 82.30 in the championship round of the women’s mogul competition.

That was good enough for her to win the gold medal ahead of defending champion Jakara Anthony, who slipped up during her attempt.

Lemley won it all alongside American teammate Jaelin Kauf, who finished in second. The pair went on to win silver in the women’s duo moguls competition.

Hockey remains undefeated

The women’s hockey team kept their streak of shutting out their opponents alive when they cruised past Italy on Friday. Kendall Coyne Schofield of the Frost scored twice in a 6-0 victory.

This is the fourth consecutive game they have defeated their opponents without allowing a goal. They will look to extend their streak when they take on Sweden in the semifinals, before playing in the medal rounds.

If their trajectory continues, they could well be on their way to a rematch with Canada, whom they shut out in a preliminary match. But the likelihood of that coming to fruition will be harder with Marie-Phillip Poulin back from injury.

The men’s hockey team, meanwhile, has been able to find a similar level of success. Consecutive wins in the preliminary round give them traction going into their next preliminary game against Germany.

Another win can inch them closer towards bringing home a gold medal, something they haven’t done since the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980. Forty-six years later, the Auston Matthews-led team has its sights on winning it all.
