MetLife Stadium is set to host a major Group F match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup on Tuesday at noon ET, featuring Borussia Dortmund and Fluminense. Dortmund, a top contender in the German Bundesliga for the past 30 years, is looking to end a challenging year on a high note after reaching the UEFA Champions League Final last season. They finished fourth in the Bundesliga, exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals, and were knocked out in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. This led to the dismissal of manager Niri Sahin in January, with Niko Kovac appointed as his successor, guiding the team back to Champions League qualification.
Under Kovac, Dortmund scored 44 goals in 20 matches, strengthening their squad with the acquisition of 19-year-old Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland. His brother Jude, a star for England, plays for Real Madrid. “Our expectations are clear,” Kovac stated regarding the Club World Cup. “We aim to advance from the group stage and continue progressing. We are favorites in Group F, along with Fluminense, and must secure one of the top two spots.”
Facing Fluminense in the opening match, Dortmund anticipates a tough challenge. Fluminense, the second-most successful club in Rio de Janeiro, trails in fifth place in the Brasileirão and lost the Cariocão final to rivals Flamengo. With star striker German Cano sidelined due to a knee injury, the squad still boasts talented players like defender Thiago Silva. Fluminense’s dynamic Brazilian style presents a unique challenge for Dortmund. “Brazilian teams are always competitive,” Kovac noted. “Both teams need a strong start, as the first match often dictates the approach for subsequent games. It’s crucial for both us and Fluminense to perform well in this match.”
